Child-Directed Services

We work directly with children and teens to improve their lives and live a life that they love. For many of our clients, we incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) to build willingness to do hard things and flexibility around difficult thoughts and feelings. We use games, activities, metaphors, and lots of practice to support our clients to grow their skills.  Our clients learn about how their minds and emotions work to improve their coping and emotional regulation skills and willingness to do hard things. We meet children and adolescents where they’re at, growing their skills, developing helpful routines, and disruptive unhelpful patterns. We work with children and adolescents to:
  • Reduce anxieties, fears, and OCD-related patterns of behavior
  • Improve flexibility and reduce rigidity
  • Improve emotional regulation, coping, perspective taking, and willingness to do hard things
  • Expand their food repertoire
  • Develop healthy sleep habits and improve their sleep routine
  • Improve communication, executive functioning, organizational, and social skills
  • Develop self-management, impulse control, and attending behavior
  • Improve their self-image as a learner
  • Identify what matters to them and work to build a life that they love

Direct services typically take place at your home to improve your child’s comfort and to facilitate development of a trusting and successful relationship.

Parent Coaching and Consultation

We work collaboratively with parents to understand their child’s strengths and challenges and identify what is getting in their child’s way. We empower parents to develop their own skills to support their children's growth as well as to improve their parenting and their connections with their children. Once we understand what is contributing to the challenges that parents are seeing, we work together with parents to set their children up for success and guide them to improve their skills. We work with parents to reduce stress, develop helpful routines, and disrupt unhelpful patterns. Through parent coaching and consultation, parents can learn to:
  • More helpfully respond to concerning behaviors
  • Decrease their child’s anxiety and increase resilience with components of the SPACE program
  • Build routines and practice opportunities to improve their child’s functioning, such as with homework, cooperation with family routines, and play/social skills
  • Improve their child’s food repertoire and mealtime behavior
  • Reduce bedtime challenges and improve their child’s sleep
  • Build toileting and other self-care skills
  • Improve their parenting skills, build connection with their child, and parent in accordance with the kind of parent they want to be

Parent coaching and consultation is typically provided virtually for the convenience of parents to enable them to participate in sessions from any location.

Behavioral Feeding Therapy

Many children with and without disabilities have picky eating habits. Parents know that food refusal and selectivity can impact children’s health and growth, making mealtimes stressful for children and their families. For some children, challenging behavior during mealtimes, such as food refusal, tantrums, and even gagging and vomiting can result in even more stressful meals.

Behavioral Feeding Therapy utilizes evidence-based strategies to improve children's eating and mealtime behavior. Techniques are founded in the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and data collection enables us to monitor progress and demonstrate improvement in feeding and mealtime behaviors. Families are considered central to the treatment team, and we regularly incorporate components of the Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) program. When applicable, collaboration between home, school, and other therapy environments is encouraged.

Support for Children in Schools

IEP and 504 Plan Support
Navigating the special education process can be overwhelming, but parents don't have to do it alone. We use our experience and expertise to support parents and ensure their children’s educational needs are being met and that they are getting the best possible supports at school by:

  • Reviewing your child's education plans and records
  • Making recommendations and providing guidance during the IEP or 504 Plan process
  • Attending IEP and 504 meetings as your partner
  • Collaborating with school teams to develop effective supports, accommodations, and interventions
  • Offering consultation and training to school staff to best support your child
Preschool and Daycare Support and Consultation
Parents may be caught off-guard when they receive reports from preschool or daycare staff saying that their child is exhibiting problem behaviors or is having a hard time participating with their peers. We work with parents and schools to identify the source of the child’s challenges in that setting and to support staff to help the child be successful in that environment by:
  • Observing the child in the preschool or daycare environment
  • Hearing directly from the school staff about the challenges and what is needed for the child to be successful in that environment
  • Learning from the parents how the child is functioning in other environments and what supports have been helpful outside of school
  • Collaborating with school staff to implement supports and strategies to improve effective participation and reduce interfering behavior
